Achilles 24

Songeur NZL823
Thanks to Geoff Davies for providing the photos and information.

'Songeur' is in Auckland, New Zealand with her owner Geoff Davies. An Achilles 24 is a rare sight in that part of the world and she may in fact be the only one in New Zealand - Geoff saw her after she was advertised as a Van Der Statd 26 of unknown pedigree! She has a fascinating history and has sailed across many thousands of miles of ocean.

An Achilles brochure notes that after completing her from a primary kit her first owner, Rod Kendall, sailed her singlehanded in the 1975 Azores And Back Race (AZAB) which still starts and finishes in Falmouth every four years; the next AZAB starts on the 7th of June 2003. Songeur competed in the 1976 Observer Singlehanded Trans-Atlantic Race (OSTAR), a race remembered for the very heavy weather the yachts encountered. She was the smallest yacht of the 125 entries and while 53 yachts did not complete the race, Songeur finished 51st in her class with a crossing of 49 days.

Songeur spent some time on the east coast of the USA before Rod Kendall sailed her across the Pacific to New Zealand. On the way he met Sqdn Ldr Zotov in the Cook Islands who was also sailing an Achilles 24 to New Zealand. Since Songeur's arrival in New Zealand she has completed five crossings of the Tasman Sea to Australia and has cruised extensively in the Pacific Islands.

She has many modifications from the standard boat, particularly in the cabin. The space for the starboard quarter berth has been used for the galley with storage forward where the cooker would normally go. The
port quarter berth is retained but there is a table in the space usually used for the sink.
