Achilles 24

11 Achilles
Thanks to Cornel Carpenter for providing the photo and information.

Boat Name: Achilles.
Sail No. 11.
Year of build: 1970.
Fin Keel 7/8 rigged.

She can be seen in all her original glory on the front cover of some very old sales literature published by Butler Mouldings Ltd. Presently she is in dry dock down in Kent, awaiting lots of TLC once I have built a trailer to bring her home.

She needs a complete refit throughout and some aspects need changing, ie the main sheet is connected to a traveller which is midway athwart the cockpit attached to a boom claw. At present the outboard is mounted on a raise and lower bracket on the starboard side of the transom, this needs to be rectified by cutting a hole through the cockpit sole and the hull to form a well as in later boats.

I believe she is the first Achilles 24 to be sold by Butlers as sail nos. 1-10 were proto-types used by Oliver Lee and all of the documentation that I have indicates that this is the case. However the owners' literature indicates that Aeolus is sail no. 11 and Achilles sail no. 12, it might, of course, be possible that the sail nos. were interposed but various certificates from the Medway Yachting Association, which I have in my possession, all list Achilles as sail no. 11. Furthermore on the sales literature mentioned above, the photograph shows Achilles with sail no.11. I think therefore I own the oldest Achilles 24.

Cornel Carpenter.
